I am wondering if one of those dental insurance plans thru AFLAC, etc. is ever a good investment.?

It seems that you'd sometimes pay out way more in premiums than what a lot dental / orthodontic costs would be.

I am wondering if one of those dental insurance plans thru AFLAC, etc. is ever a good investment.?
I don't think dental insurance is good unless it is through your employer or you have very bad teeth. Cleaning is only about $125 and with x-rays and check up about $165. If you go once or twice a year you will not need anything further. Even filling and extractions are only a few hundred. Where it becomes expensive is when you need caps and false teeth. In any case you will not go broke like one visit to the hospital.
Reply:I am responsible for insurance billing in my dental office. AFLAC is OK as a secondary, but it pays on a fee schedule and it ain't much. Maybe $25 for a cleaning visit - no matter what procedures are charged out.

I don't know what it costs in premiums, but multiply what you you pay every month times 12....if what you get in payments is less than that, you might as well self insure.
Reply:Congratulations. You've done the math. So has AFLAC. They like money even more than dentists.

They must offer different plans, because I have one patient who has his entire cleaning visit paid for and another who only gets $25 like emmalue mentioned.
Reply:i have a dental discount program that only cost 11.95 a month. or 19.95 a month for everyone living under your roof. 20-80% off. no less than 20% off all processes. with the plan you get dental, prescription drug, vision, and chiropractic. Discounts on all these. go to

Locate providers. find dentist in your area.

Sign up! you will get a package in the mail. Call the 1800 tell the lady, or man, where you want to go they call you back. after that you go when you want as many times as you want, change dentist anytime, without telling anyone. its a great deal with all you get and can save you a lot of money!
Reply:You have several great answers, however, if you presently have a Dentist that you are happy with, call them and see what insurance plans they are on contract with. The majority of private policy plans that you mentioned, require you to visit a Dentist from a list that they provide you. Also take in to consideration your age, how much present dental work you have in your mouth already, (large restorations, crowns, bridges, etc) which have a potential to fail down the road. It is true, you could end up spending more on premiums that will surpass the actual savings you would see with the plan. Again, call your present Dentist, get a estimate of what his/her fee's for routine cleanings, restorations, etc and compare that to your premium and the benefits. Good Luck! Not sure what state you are in, but in my area, Blue Cross Blue Shield is the most reasonable plan with the best benefits.
Reply:The problem with dental insurance is that most all of the companies have a waiting period...usually 6 months...and require pretty high copays. Some only cover basic things and don't cover things like crowns and orthodontics.

You might want to try a discount dental plan. They are cheap...usually less than $100 per year and they give you a big discount off of what the dentist charges, and there is no waiting peroid. I found a plan at http://dental-ppo.com that worked well for me. You can search by zip code to see what plans are available in your area.
Reply:If you do want some kind of insurance, go online and look up Cigna dental insurance. They have a great discount plan. You pay then very little monthly premium or a one time a year amount which isn't much either. Then you find and in network dentist with Cigna, and you pay what Cigna insurance would pay which is very little, like $75 for a cleaning exam and x-rays, which is good cause on office I worked at charged $140 as a discounted out of pocket rate for people without insurance. Check it out. GOOD LUCK!
